Have you ever heard the expression, “you’re shoulding all over yourself”?
So often, we create narratives on how life, or how we, “should” be. And then, of course, those thoughts are typically followed by judgement statements or feelings:
I should get up earlier to get things done. I’m so lazy.
I should be around people more, even though it’s hard. Something must be wrong with me.
Combating these automatic thoughts with radical acceptance sounds nice, but it can be more difficult in practice - especially if you’ve never done it before. Radical acceptance isn’t magically believing the opposite of these stories, rather, it’s creating space for you to see and appreciate where you are so you can gain clarity on how to move ahead.
And this is how coaching in these moments are so powerful.
Instead of the internal monologue of judgement, guilt, and shame, coaching allows for the conversation to be more open:
I want to get up earlier to get things done. It’s hard to wake up early because I go to bed late at night. I need and deserve rest, so maybe I can make some changes to support waking up earlier.
I want to be around friends, but it’s often so overwhelming. Usually, my friends want to go out to clubs or restaurants, and we’re always out as a group. We’ve never done something quiet, like a 1:1 hike or an afternoon coffee - so maybe I can try that and see how I feel.
Coaching provides space for exploration of your needs, values, and goals so you can make meaningful and impactful change.
